Major Leverhulme Grant for Post-devolution Poetry (17-04-2012)

Prof Peter Barry joined by former NWR editor Kathryn Gray and Dr Matthew Jarvis to research and publish on post-devolution poetry in Wales, based at Aberystwyth University English department
The Leverhulme Trust has awarded distinguished academic Professor Peter Barry (author of Poetry Wars) a major research grant of £232,042 for 'Devolved Voices' – a three-year project which focuses on the poetic output in English from Wales since 1997. There will be a particular emphasis on poets who have achieved recognition and prominence since devolution. Professor Barry will be joined on the team by former NWR editor Kathryn Gray and academic Dr Matthew Jarvis as researchers. The project boasts an illustrious advisory panel, including National Poet of Wales Gillian Clarke, T S Eliot Prize winner Philip Gross, and poet, novelist and commentator Owen Sheers. Devolved Voices will result in several books, one of which will be a lively collection of interviews with poets. The project will also launch a video-rich website (going live this Sept in its first incarnation) which will provide an important record of discussions with poets themselves, of poets reading their own work, and of interviews with other notable players on the contemporary English-language poetry scene in Wales. The website is intended to serve not only as a significant archive of material for future scholars but also as an entry-point into the project’s work for readers of poetry in general. The project should be stimulating and fresh, and shine a light on a vibrant scene.
