Eluned Gramich's travel memoir set in Japan scoops Wales Book of the Year nomination, 2016

Woman Who Brings the Rain, Eluned Gramich's memoir of Japan, today (19 May 2016) was shortlisted for Wales Book of the Year. This is Eluned's first published book as original author and is New Welsh Review's imprint, New Welsh Rarebyte's debut book. The title was published as an ebook in October and, to celebrate the nomination, in print for the first time, today. Eluned's book was also the inaugural winner of the magazine's New Welsh Writing Awards 2015 under the title 'Scenes from a Hokkaidan Life', chosen by judges Gwen Davies and Mark Cocker. As part of her latter prize Eluned met Cathryn Summerhayes of WME literary agency who is now working with her in developing her debut novel. The 2016 prize, on travel writing is currently at longlist stage: the shortlist will be announced on 1 June at Hay Festival (3pm, Summerhouse, Festival site, free entry), with judges Gwen Davies and Rory MacLean. The New Welsh Writing Awards was established in 2015 to celebrate short-form nonfiction writing: part of the prize to date has been £1000 and publication on New Welsh Review's New Welsh Rarebyte imprint, as well as extract publication in our New Welsh Reader magazine. Extracts from highly commended and longlisted entries to the Awards will be published in edition 112 of New Welsh Reader (autumn 2016, 1 September).
