NWR Issue 103

NWR Records First Book Group

Mary Jacob & Suzy Ceulan Hughes made marvellous contributions last night to a recorded book club on Eliza Granville's novel Gretel & the Dark for our first podcast, ably chaired by NWR multimedia producer Caroline Stockford.

There was disagreement about how effective was the novel's cast size and how late the 'big reveal' revealed itself but agreement on the power of the subject matter and use of northern European folk tales and nineteenth-century fables such as Struwwelpeter (Shock-headed Peter) that scared children into submission. Also agreement that, despite publisher and reviewer indications, this novel isn't ideally tailoured to the Young Adult market. Eliza Granville's novel draft, then entitled 'Narrenturm', was previewed in NWR 95, spring 2012. She did her MA at Aberystwyth University under the supervision of Richard Marggraf Turley, and Richard is generously thanked in the novel's acknowledgments.

The book group was NWR's first ever, and the first recorded session which will form part of a podcast on authors and book news from Wales. Book clubs will become a regular feature of our podcasts: a second, to be held later in the month, will record club member Ellen Bell and others discussing Cynan Jones' The Dig. The first podcast will be released in April.
