Shani Rhys James, who turned sixty this summer, is one of Britain’s landmark figurative painters, particularly in terms of autobiographical art. She has won many prestigious awards for painting, including the Jerwood Painting Prize 2003 and the Gold Medal at the National Eisteddfod in 1992; she was awarded an MBE for services to Welsh art in 2006. Her work is featured in many public collections. Her new paintings on a large scale are displayed in the exhibition

The Rivalry of Flowers, previewed here, takes its title from a poem written by Michael Glover in response to the artist’s painting, ‘Yellow Wallpaper II’. This touring exhibition, initiated by Aberystwyth Arts Centre in collaboration with Connaught Brown Fine Art, was launched at Kings Place, London.
