From ‘My Mary Jane’, Rhian Edwards, NWR 100:
‘What you see before you is the one that got away, the ying to the yang of what could have been a much-loved pair. This was the first rhyming couplet of shoes I was ever trusted to choose, cherry-picked they were and cherry they are, with the glaze of a toffee apple and the shine of a fat man’s sweaty cheek.’
Rhian Edwards’ first poetry collection,
Clueless Dogs (Seren), was shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best First Collection 2012, and this month was also shortlisted for the Wales Book of the Year award. A poet and musician, she has delivered over three hundred stage, radio and festival performances worldwide. Rhian’s residency at Aberystwyth Arts Centre comes to an end this month. She lives in Bridgend. This story was commissioned for the Inaugural Flash Fiction Day in Wales, and was a response to the painting, 'Mary Jane' by Paul Edwards {pictured, courtesy of the artist}.
