From ‘A Perfect Queen’, Inés Garland, translated by Richard Gwyn, NWR 100:
‘In the bathroom Mama is doing her make-up with the door open. Coming out she smiles at me and one day I will think that it is like watching her on television….. I follow her to the living room where she puts on some music. Dream a little dream of me. I follow her into the kitchen. She talks with Berta. My sisters watch her. I will know when I write this that for my sisters too she seems like a distant queen, this woman in velvet trousers and a glittering polo- neck sweater and long blonde hair that falls down her back.’
Inés Garland is an Argentinian short story writer and novelist. Her novel
Una reina perfecta (A Perfect Queen) received an Argentine National Arts Foundation Award. Her writing attracted an international audience with the sale in Germany of
