From ‘Lifeboat’, Cynan Jones, NWR 100:

‘You hear, on the slight breeze, the tunt tunt, tunt tunt before you see the boat. A low craft, inflatable, orange, a few yards out from shore. You feel illicit. When the boat comes alongside they cut the engine. Shout. Waves break, the breeze. You don’t hear. Swash filters in the pools. A man in the prow carries a boat hook as if it’s an harpoon. They are in drysuits, white helmets, bright life jackets. One of the crew seats himself on the gunwale and pushes himself into the water. He swims strangely, held up by the lifejacket, lifted and pushed by the water. Like a spaceman.’

Cynan Jones’ novellas are The Long Dry (Parthian), Everything I Found on the Beach (Parthian), Bird, Blood, Snow (Seren) and The Dig (Granta, forthcoming). This spring his story 'The Dig’ was shortlisted for the Sunday Times EFG Private Bank Short Story Award, 2013. He is the judge of NWR’s Flash in the Pen competition for a story in 100 words which will be announced at Hay Festival on 28 May. The decision regarding the three winners of the competition was made today. He is also in conversation with NWR editor Gwen Davies at Hay on 28 May, 5.30pm New Stories from the Mabinogion tickets
