The Fox and The Foil Mill

He thumped the wheel with the heel of his hand and gripped the key again. Heard the engine search and stutter in the darkness.

He slammed the door of the Cortina behind him, and blinkered by his upturned collar, started home on foot. The lanes were quiet. Not a person passed him. And the snow in the fields gave off a strange glow.

His mind was a carousel of self-recrimination, calculating how long it would take him: to reach home, get a jerry can of petrol, walk back to the car, and drive home again. How long it would be before he could climb into bed – whether there would still be any of his wife’s warmth left in it.

She heard the shake of his keys, then the turning of the locks – first the safety, then the Yale. She heard him downstairs opening the fridge.

You’re late, she said...

Gavin Goodwin was born in Newport, Gwent. His first pamphlet, Estate Fragments, was published by Knives, Forks and Spoons Press in 2014. His second, Blue Rain, was a winner of the 2017 Cinnamon Press Poetry Pamphlet Prize. He lectures in English and Creative Writing at Aberystwyth University, and is a coordinator of Contempo (The Centre for Contemporary Poetry).
