Pontypool Ski Slope

A summer evening.
Three boys leaning
on bicycles
watched other boys
learn slalom skills.
Each of the three
had a muddy line
like a tyre track
the length of his spine
and a bored look...


Stephen Payne is Professor of Human-centric Systems at the University of Bath. He lives with his family in Penarth. His pamphlet, The Probabilities of Balance, was published by Smiths Knoll in 2010. His first full collection, Pattern Beyond Chance, was published in 2015 by HappenStance press, and shortlisted for Wales Book of the Year.
