Some Kind of Immortality

This is the second time with this one – let's call her Alice – belts and braces, she needs to make sure it works. Though, for my part, there’s never been a problem. And this will be straightforward. She’s not unfanciable, thirty-five or thereabouts, around my height, auburn hair swept back and held by a tortoiseshell clip, business-like, neat. Laptop Googling away on the coffee table to indicate that she’s busy, end of a working day. No offer of coffee this time. On the bathroom shelf above the closed toilet lid on which I’m sitting are copies of National Geographic, an old Private Eye, Gone Girl with a page turned down two-thirds of the way through. And a copy of Playboy; thoughtful that.
