From ‘Tokyo Spaces’, Jayne Joso’s memoir of the city, NWR 100:
‘In the vinyl room I started to notice that almost everything in there was covered somehow in plastic. Either in some protective covering that it must have arrived in from the store, never removed; or like the dining table, with its transparent plastic sheet; or like the remote controls for the TV and other electrical devices, wrapped tightly in layer upon layer of cellophane. Everything, all of it, plastic. A room covered, coated, wrapped and bound in some form of prophylactic. Protecting it, keeping it safe. Opposite were two easy chairs, massage chairs. Each in a thick plastic jacket, each plastic jacket coated in dust, each with an accompanying remote bound in cellophane that was sticky to the touch.’
is the author of two novels, Soothing Music for Stray Cats
and Perfect Architect
(Alcemi). In 2012, she was Coracle Ireland International Writer in Residence. In 2013, her poem ‘Desire’ was acquired by MoMA Library, New York, for its permanent collection. Her next novel is set in Tokyo.
