Quick checklist of favourites from 26 Treasures

Published in September but curiously available to those in the know and launched last week at Gŵyl Arall Caernarfon; poems of 62 words (‘sestudes’) inspired by the objects in the national collections of Scotland, Wales, England and Northern Ireland. The Welsh section comprises 13 originals in Welsh and English, and 13 Welsh and English translations. The Northern Ireland section matches original artwork to images. Beautifully designed by Sam Gray of www.madebyfabric.com.

Here are those that stand out for me. ‘The Gough Looking-Glass’ by Maura Dooley, ‘Condiment Set’ by Beth Norris (V&A Collection). From the National Library of Wales’ collection, Paul Henry’s adaptation, ‘Lineage’, ‘Elin ap Hywel’s translation, ‘Storybook for Children’; ‘Yn y Llyfr Hwn’ by Karen Owen, Tom Morris’ translation, ‘Llyfr Aneurin’, ‘Megan Eats Grapes’ by Elen Lewis and its translation, ‘Megan yn Bwyta Grawnwin’ by Rhys Iorwerth, ‘Old Banknotes’ by Lin Sagovsky and its translation, ‘Hen Arian Bapur’ which won Hywel Meilyr Griffiths this year’s Her Gyfieithu Challenge (watch out for it splashed across NWR’s new canvas bags, launched at the Eisteddfod and sponsored by Translators House Wales). From The Ulster Museum: ‘Desdemona’s Lament to the Negative Space’ by Gillian Colhoun, ‘Irish Man’ by Bernard MacLaverty, ‘Bog Butter’ by Ian Sansom, ‘and ‘Salamander’ by Michael Longley. And from the National Museum of Scotland: ‘Lizzie Was Here’ by Aimee Chalmers, ‘Lewis Chessmen’ by V Campbell, ‘The Maiden Tae Her Master’ by James Robertson and ‘Jonet Addresses the Kirk’ by Jamie Jauncey.
