Desperate Dan’s Retirement Plan

Aunt Aggie’s tombstone, black granite
is a hot coal in desert sunset.
It speaks to Dan, his cactus stubble
dusted with grey.

Your bones are rotting,
your muscles fatty
from decades of cow pies,
empty dishes, horns set aside.
